Sharon invites community to Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day Nov. 18
The Town of Sharon invites students, staff, families and community members to a Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day celebration Nov. 18 at 8 a.m. The walk starts at Dr. Walter A. Griffin Playground and ends at Cottage Street School.
The Town of Sharon announced a Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day celebration for Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 8 a.m. at the Dr. Walter A. Griffin Playground, 85 Ames St. The walk will end at the Cottage Street School, 30 Cottage St. The rain date is Friday, Nov. 20.
Students, staff, families and community members are welcome to attend.
The day honors civil rights activist Ruby Bridges. At age 6, she was the first African American child to attend the formerly whites-only William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis on Nov. 14, 1960. U.S. Marshals escorted her and her mother to school, where a crowd of people who did not want her there yelled things at her.
The town said the day encourages young people to stand up against racism and bullying, embrace kindness and inclusion, and recognize the positive impact they can make in their own communities. The event will also be an opportunity to talk with students about courage, inclusion, standing up for others and creating a community where everyone feels welcomed and respected.
The celebration is a collaboration of the Town of Sharon's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and Sharon METCO.
