Discover Sharon series begins with Italian heritage evening
The Town of Sharon announced a free monthly Discover Sharon series with the Sharon Pluralism Network, starting with an Italian heritage evening Nov. 5 at the library. Events for other communities are in the works, and residents can sign up to represent their culture.
The Town of Sharon announced Oct. 20 a new free monthly program, the Discover Sharon Series, that celebrates the cultures, traditions and communities in town. The town's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee (DEIC) is running it in partnership with the Sharon Pluralism Network.
The first event was scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sharon Public Library, 1 School St. It focused on Italian heritage, with Sharon residents sharing the food, games, language and traditions they grew up with and still celebrate.
Planned activities included pasta making (with ravioli and gnocchi makers and recipe handouts to take home), Venetian mask decorating for children, a Guess the Pasta table game for all ages, and Scopa, a traditional Italian card game. There was also a short lesson in Italian words and phrases, photo props, displays of posters, books, postcards and a soccer kit, a slideshow and food and refreshments. Residents who wanted to help with the Italian heritage event were asked to email adrienne.dimarco@gmail.com.
Each Discover Sharon event is a partnership between the DEIC and residents who represent their own culture and heritage. Each will feature a different group and may include food, storytelling, arts and crafts, a question and answer session and performances. The town said every event will have experiences for people from adults to preschool-aged children.
The series continues through the year. The DEIC is working on events with the Chinese, Haitian, Indian, Jewish, Muslim and Polish communities, and dates will be announced as they are confirmed. The town said it would like to work with more residents to share their cultures. Residents can sign up to represent their culture through the links on the town's announcement.
