SHARON — A Finance Committee subcommittee reviewing elected official compensation and town clerk selection began assessing whether the town clerk should shift from elected to appointed status ahead of a November deadline for May town meeting warrant recommendations. Chair Phillip King, member Sharon Duret, and Zach Altman discussed data collection on comparable towns and inconsistencies in how Sharon compensates elected positions: the Board of Assessors, Select Board, and moderator receive pay while the planning board and school committee do not. Finance Committee Chair Donald Brichta noted an appointed clerk could cost $10,000 to $20,000 more annually but might provide stronger qualifications.

The subcommittee plans to invite the current town clerk and another official to a future meeting to discuss both approaches and steps required for any potential change.
